01her hand
Everything here was made by hand. Nothing here was made by AI.
In 2024, while studying design at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore, Sophia Vasko made a magazine. She called it OBLIVIOUS — Perception vs. Reality: take a look at our world through clear eyes.
Every line was drawn by her hand. Every letter of every headline was written in her handwriting. Artificial intelligence was just entering the world as she was leaving it — she never used it, and never needed it. What she left is entirely, exactly her.
That is what this place preserves: her belief in what the world could be, recorded in her own hand, at the very moment the machines arrived.
02her words
The meaning of love, in her own writing.
At the heart of her magazine, Sophia wrote about the one thing she believed held everything else together. The title is her handwriting. The words are hers, unchanged.
“Love, a concept so intricately woven into the fabric of human existence, transcends mere emotion or affection. It is a profound connection illustrated through our bonds with others … In its purest form, love embodies selflessness and empathy.”
03her argument
She saw the machines coming. She told us what to do.
In her final comic, two friends talk over matcha lattes about the state of the world — the climate, the crisis, and the arrival of AI. It is funny, and gentle, and it contains a complete philosophy.
she wrote —
“We all need to just stop.”
“We hold the power to be creative.”
“We can't blame tech for our own laziness, y'know?”
“I guess the future is in our hands!”
Read them in order. Stop — the stillness first. Then the power to be. Then the responsibility: technology is never to blame and never to thank, because people hold the pen. And then her last line, two friends raising their cups: the future is in our hands.
This is the belief BlockCertsAI and MAIAi are built on. “You Drive. AI Rides Shotgun.” is Sophia's argument, carried forward — the human hand on the wheel, always. She said it first, in ink, before the world had the words for it.

04her story
Sophia Milan Vasko
june 23, 2003 — june 4, 2024
Artist. Designer. Daughter, sister, friend. Sophia grew up by the ocean in Victoria, British Columbia, and studied design at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore and at OCAD University in Toronto.
In 2025, OCAD University awarded Sophia her Bachelor's degree — Honours with Distinction — posthumously. Her father accepted it on her behalf. The university placed a permanent memorial to Sophia in its school park, where students pass her name every day on their way to make things by hand.
She left too soon, and she left enough: a body of work, a way of seeing, and a set of instructions — drawn plainly enough for all of us to follow.
“The spirit of life never dies.”
her story is her family's to tell. this page will grow as it can be shared — in her family's time, in her family's words.
05the door
She left from one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Sophia passed in Ninh Bình, Việt Nam — traveling at the height of her life, in the Asia she loved, honouring the Asian side of her heritage. Ninh Bình is the home of Tràng An: limestone mountains rising straight out of rivers and rice fields, threaded with caves that have sheltered people for almost thirty thousand years, cradling Hoa Lư, the thousand-year-old first capital of Việt Nam.
The world had already marked this place as belonging to everyone. UNESCO inscribed Tràng An on the World Heritage List for its outstanding universal value — the first site in Việt Nam ever honoured for nature and culture together. Earth and humanity, together.
The inscription was declared on the morning of June 23, 2014. Sophia's eleventh birthday — ten years before she left us there.
We discovered this only after she was gone. The universal connection, waiting for us to find it.
“There is more than we can ever imagine. Perhaps Sophia left us to show us that all we can do is imagine what that more is — from the door we enter into, to the door we all eventually leave by.”
The last panel of her comic is friends sitting together before mountains and an open sky. This is why the Institute carries her name: to help protect the beautiful places of the earth — the doors — and the people who pass through them.
06the rings
The world she saw, in concentric rings.
Drop one stone into still water and the stillness itself carries the rings outward. Sophia's vision moves the same way: it begins with a person who stops — and radiates through their community to the living earth.
Through it all runs one gold orbit — the same interlocking orbits her hand drew into the MAIAi mark: AI and humanity, two rings that only make the pattern together.
- technology meeting the beauty of the earth — never replacing it.
- people loving human nature more than greed and power.
- profit creating a better future for many — not the only future that exists for the few.
07gallery of thoughts on the future
Her originals, kept true forever.
A curated gallery of Sophia's original works is being assembled by her family — the Gallery of Thoughts on the Future, the founding exhibition of the Institute.
Each original is hashed to the BlockCerts Blockchain as an NFT. Not speculation — provenance. A permanent, unforgeable record that this line was her line, this hand was her hand. In a world filling up with generated images, Sophia's work will always be provably, mathematically real.
08the institute
Sophia Earth & Humanity Institute
Founded in Sophia's name — a non-profit society. Wisdom for a balanced future: bridging ancient wisdom and modern innovation so that the earth, and the people on it, are what technology serves.
The founding you have just walked through is where the Institute begins. Its living work — purpose, projects, support, and MAIAi — continues on the Institute's own page.
